Creativity and play are natural bedfellows. We all know intuitively that unless it really is a life and death issue that a little levity is good for idea generation. Research shows that people who have fun at work are more creative, more productive, work better with others and call in sick less often and apparently 98% of CEO’s would give preference to job candidates with a sense of humour. So inject a little fun into your next session.
- Give everyone a secret mission in the workshop written on a piece of paper when they come into the room. They have to get song lines into the conversation or use an unusual word. They have to tell a big, fat lie. Or they have to pretend to be someone else. Or speak in tongues at least once.
- Watch a few minutes of comedy before you start trying to generate ideas – research shows it helps creative thought.
- Have a box of board games and play a quick round of Pictionary or Connect 4 every 10 minutes in a creative session.
